Trump: ‘I have to get personal’ citing ‘nasty’ Obamas at DNC

Former President Trump has recently voiced his frustration over the “nasty” remarks made by Barack and Michelle Obama during their speeches at the Democratic National Convention (DNC). At a rally in Arizona on Friday, Trump criticised the former first couple, claiming they had launched personal attacks against him, which he felt justified his own potential shift to a more personal campaign strategy.

Trump Responds to Obama’s Critiques

During his rally, Trump stated, “He was nasty to me. He was nasty. Michelle was nasty. They’re all nasty,” referring to the Obamas’ speeches earlier in the week. The former president expressed his dissatisfaction with the advice from his advisers, who have urged him to focus on policy rather than personal attacks. Trump remarked, “I call them up, my geniuses, they get paid a fortune… I say, ‘They’re knocking the hell out of me and you say I shouldn’t get personal. I have to get personal. They get personal’”.

Trump’s comments come as he faces Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. He criticised Harris for her acceptance speech, where she repeatedly attacked him. Trump noted the irony in being told to avoid personal attacks while the Obamas were doing just that. “They’re allowed to get personal with me but I’m not allowed to get personal to them,” he added, highlighting the ongoing tension between him and the Obamas, which has been fueled by years of political rivalry and personal animosity, particularly stemming from Trump’s promotion of the birther conspiracy regarding Barack Obama’s citizenship.

The Obamas’ Criticism

The Obamas’ speeches at the DNC marked a departure from their previous calls for civility in political discourse.

Michelle Obama criticised Trump for benefiting from generational wealth and lacking an understanding of hard work, while Barack Obama likened Trump to an annoying neighbour, suggesting he was self-serving. Their remarks have energised the Democratic base and intensified the rivalry with Trump, who has historically used personal attacks as part of his political strategy.
