HIGH POINT, N.C. —
A shopping trip turned violent at the North Main Street location of a major grocery chain when a dispute over a turkey promotion escalated into gunfire outside the store.
According to the High Point Police Department (HPPD), the incident began inside the store when a customer argued with an employee about a “spend $35 / 29 ¢ per pound turkey” deal. A second customer intervened in that argument. What began as a disagreement inside the aisles spilled out into the parking lot around 6:30 p.m., where the two men exchanged gunfire. ◆
HPPD said officers found a man wounded with a gunshot to his arm. The victim was transported to a local hospital with what are described as traumatic injuries. The names of those involved and whether arrests have been made have not yet been released. ◆

What Went Down Inside the Store
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the promotional turkey had been confused at checkout. An employee reported telling a customer that the deal required a minimum $35 spend. As the employee explained the terms, another customer came from a different register and allegedly confronted the first customer, sparking the heated argument. ◆
The situation escalated when the first man left the store, reportedly to retrieve a firearm. Moments later, both men met outside and began exchanging gunfire in the parking lot.
Aftermath & Investigation
• The store was closed for the remainder of the evening, with notices on the door that it would reopen at 6 a.m. the next morning. ◆
• Investigators from HPPD are actively interviewing witnesses and reviewing video footage; charges and arrests are not yet confirmed.
• No other injuries or public threats have been reported to date.

Community Impact & Safety Concerns
What starts as a dispute over a turkey—something many consider a basic grocery item—ended in serious violence in front of other shoppers and employees. The incident is raising red flags for public safety advocates and residents alike: the presence of firearms in everyday retail environments, customer disputes turning extreme, and the vulnerability of bystanders during such incidents.
Conclusion
The High Point community and the grocery chain involved will face pressure to address safety protocols, dispute resolution training, and incident response.
