GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — The Greensboro police release video of controversial McRae Street traffic stop after weeks of public debate and calls for transparency. On Thursday, the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) released nine body camera and dashcam videos that show what unfolded during the May 13 incident, which has drawn widespread attention within the community.
The videos, posted to the department’s official YouTube channel, provide the full sequence of events surrounding the late-night stop. Previously, only a short cellphone clip had circulated on social media, fueling concerns and demands for an official release.
Details of the Traffic Stop
According to police reports, around 11:40 p.m. on May 13, officers were responding to a shots-fired call in the Willow Road area. While waiting at a red light at Willow Road and Gate City Boulevard, an officer noticed a dark-colored sedan with a broken headlight. The car turned onto McRae Street, where police conducted a stop for the equipment violation.
The driver was identified as 24-year-old Damonta Glover, who cooperated with officers. Two passengers, 27-year-old Savon Johnson and 20-year-old A’mon Moore, were also in the vehicle.
Officers asked whether there were weapons in the car, noting that Glover had prior gun-related incidents, including a concealed weapon found in his vehicle in December 2024 and an arrest on May 12 for carrying a concealed gun. Citing reasonable suspicion, police said they attempted a “safety frisk.”
Confrontation Captured on Video – Video of Controversial McRae Street Traffic Stop
The released video shows one passenger refusing to be frisked, stating, “I know my rights.” Officers then ordered all occupants out of the vehicle, which police say is permitted when there is reasonable suspicion of a crime or possible weapons.
When Johnson and Moore refused to exit, tensions escalated. The footage shows officers removing them by force, with both men yelling as they were handcuffed. Johnson can be heard screaming in pain, while Moore is heard shouting at officers that he would make them “lose their jobs.”
Police later reported that neither man was injured, but said both resisted by punching and pushing officers before being restrained.

Arrests and Charges
During a search of the car, police say they found a gun inside a backpack, along with masks and shell casings.
- Damonta Glover was cited for driving with a revoked license and an equipment violation before being released.
- Savon Johnson was charged with resisting a public officer and two counts of assault on a public officer.
- A’mon Moore was charged with carrying a concealed gun, resisting a public officer, and two counts of assault on a government official.
Both Johnson and Moore were taken to the Guilford County Jail.
Police Response and Next Steps
Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson defended the legality of the stop, emphasizing that “reasonable suspicion of a crime and the suspected presence of a weapon allows an officer to conduct a frisk without consent.” He added that officers were within their authority to order the men out of the car.
The department also confirmed that an administrative review is underway to determine whether officers followed departmental policies and procedures.
