This is quantified as a percentage, indicating how much of the fire’s perimeter is secured. For example, if a fire is 30% contained, control lines have been established around 30% of its perimeter. Containment does not mean the fire is extinguished; it may still burn within those lines. Once a fire is fully contained, the next step is to control it by extinguishing any remaining hot spots and ensuring the control lines can withstand future conditions. Just because a fire is considered 100% contained, doesn’t mean, it has quench, rather, it’s having enough barriers in place to completely circulate and keep it from spreading.
