CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman stabbed to death near light rail station in Charlotte late Friday night has been identified as 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. The deadly incident happened at the East/West Blue Line station in South End, forcing major disruptions to transit service.
The Incident – Woman Stabbed to Death Near Light Rail Station
Police say the stabbing occurred around 10 p.m. at the intersection of East and West Boulevard and Camden Road. When officers arrived, they found Zarutska suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown, also sustained minor injuries during the altercation. He was transported to the hospital for treatment. CMPD confirmed that once released, Brown will face a murder charge in connection with the fatal attack.
Initial Confusion at the Scene
Early reports suggested that multiple people had been stabbed during the incident. Police later clarified that only Zarutska and Brown were involved. A third individual nearby suffered an unrelated medical emergency.
Because the East/West Blue Line station was part of the crime scene, Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) adjusted rail service. A temporary bus bridge was set up to transport passengers, operating outbound from New Bern Station to I-485 and inbound from Bland Station to UNC Charlotte from late Friday into Saturday.
Ongoing Investigation
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are still working to determine what led to the stabbing. They are asking anyone with information about the woman stabbed to death near light rail station to contact Detective Bukr at 704-432-8477 or reach out anonymously through Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
